Why no non-veg during Navratri?

I always wonder why do people stop eating non-vegetarian food during the week-long Navratri festival? They keep eating chicken and other forms of meat all through the year and still pray but during this fasting season of Navratri, they would suddenly go off non-veg diet... WHY?

Just to please God or wash off their sins? I don't understand this logic. Does it really matter what you eat and what you don't during Navratri? Can it really decide whether you are actually religious or not? Share your opinion.

Navratra fasting doesn't mean not only to avoid taking non-veg but to completely avoiding food other then fruits. Every year Navratra's fall at a time while season is changing. First time from Winter to Summer and second time Summer to Winter. This is suggested that if we fast for these 9 days, we'll stay fit throughout the coming season. Jai Ma Ambe.

UPVAAS = UP means near and VAAS means to stay....... It does not means fasting...... Upvaas means to stay near the God once need to be pure in all the terms.... Mind, body and soul..... If we eat RAAJ & TAMAS type of food we would not attain the goal for upvaas...... So Saatva food is recomended and no fasting. Upvaas do not means fasting....... I am a pure vegetarian by choice and for me killing someone for eating or to satisfy tastebuds is crime. So it does not matter when it is done or when not. Every culture or religion has its own faiths and belives. Ours religion is an ancient river flowing nonstop and carries lot of faiths and different traditions with time. Navratris are one of them and eating Satvik food is one of the things to do during this period. No body is forced to eat or not to eat non veg , its his/her own choice or faith. One thing i would like to mention here is for knowledge that at the same time when we celebrate Navratris , our neighbouring country which is famous for eating any live thing also go vegan for ten days and its their religous faith. So my dear All Americanised friends atleast have some respect for ur religion.

when you say killing someone to satisy tastebuds is crime!! dont you consume honey/ milk/ curd? why do you kill countless number of honeybees to make ur tastebuds sweet... why do you deprive the poor calves from getting their portion of their mother's milk? you also kill yeast or eat innocent organisms live when you consume curd... etc Respect is from within your heart, mind and soul..

So, what kind of Respect do you give to the animals you eat? You "pay" to get them slaughtered for you? Is that respect? As for honey -- I think you should do some research on how it is produced. GOOGLE is your best friend.

The type of food you eat makes your mental setup, during this period of fasting staying away form non-veg food helps you spiritually calming your mind and further detoxify your system.
