I am an ardent pet lover. Since childhood I've owned 18 cats. Naturally I have an instant liking for all other pet owners across the world. But there are certain types of pet owners who don't qualify for my respect. Not that my respect really matters to them but I just don't consider them as pet lovers. They may own a pet for a variety of other reasons but definitely not because they love animals.
These are the kinds who have costly looking, 'breed-conscious' selections in pets. These pets are well groomed and religiously make a monthly visit to the pet parlour. In short these animals have a lavish life. But I can't help feel that they are almost in a 'trophy-wife' situation because the owners in question spend a fortune to purchase these animals.
Now, how can anything that is living and breathing be sold and purchased? Shouldn't that be illegal? We are not allowed to sell humans because that got banned way back. Why then, are we allowed to sell and buy animals even now? I have seen people bargain with shop-keepers - "Not 10,000, that's too much. Anyway your dog is not in such a great condition... I can pay 6..." That's way too insulting for an animal who was born in free nature.
People go shopping for branded clothes and high heels. They pay for 'products' which they 'use'. Neither is an animal a product nor should it be used. If you need a pet, please go out on the road. There are thousands of dogs, cats, squirrels, birds, mice and millions of other species. Show your love to them. No one's stopping you. But please stop haggling.
Unfortunately, this is how a majority of humanity comes to 'own' their pets. In fact a lot of people would actually frown and wonder how I came to know those 18 cats that I have had the privilege of knowing.
I think the worst is when these pet owners treat stray animals like the plague. Every evening, in posh localities, rich women and men take their dogs out for a lazy stroll. In these posh localities, also resides a hoard of not so lucky dogs. These strays deal with traffic, heat, lack of water, mean stone-throwing people and the omni-present calamity called lack of food. The rich dogs will pout up their noses and walk by these strays, silently boasting of their well being. The poor dogs will take trail of the rich dogs owner, hoping to get some animal-love bestowed on them. But alas, I have seen, these very pet owners, the so-called animal lovers kick away stray dogs, pelt them with stones with utmost viciousness.
Hypocrisy? Maintaining class? What is it? Sigh...
Looks like we are spreading our class consciousness and our sense of discrimination to other species as well!
