Mukesh Ambani is undoubtedly India's biggest businessman, with big businesses in a number of different fields. But he didn't get it so easy. His father, Dhirubhai Ambani had to work very hard to get to the top. Did you know while growing up, Dhirubhai Ambani had little to no money?
Mukesh Ambani's father, Dhirubhai Ambani's story is a complete rags to riches story, right out of a movie script. Born to a school teacher, he was the third of five siblings, three brothers and two sisters. Ever since childhood, Dhirubhai was more keen on work than studies.
He repeatedly bunked classes and roamed in streets, watching people work and making money. He'd once said his mother to stop lamenting about the hardships and that he would make 'heaps of money one day.'His first job was began in his early school years by selling "bhajias" to pilgrims in Mount Girnar over the weekends. . That's how the riches man in the country started off in his life.
Born into a lower middle class family, Mukesh Ambani used to stay in a two bedroom apartment with his mother, father, a younger brother and two sisters. After taking a degree in BE in chemical engineering from the University of Bombay, Mukesh Ambani took up MBA from Stanford University but dropped out after an year only to help his father set up his PFY (polyester filament yarn) plant in 1981.
In 1987, Mukesh Ambani joined Reliance Industries and worked towards setting up of Reliance Infocomm Limited (now Reliance Communications Limited), which was focused on information and communications technology initiatives.
It was years later, Mukesh Ambani's father Dhirubhai Ambani purchased a 14-floor apartment block called 'Sea Wind' in Colaba, where, until recently, Mukesh and Anil lived with their families on different floors.
Now we will tell you how Mukesh Ambani got to marry the love of his life,Nita. Nita Ambani was obviously not as wealthy as the Ambanis. She belonged to a middle class family where where mother was a folk dancer, and she too learned Bharatnatyam when she was merely 5 years old. She started performing on stage and that's when Dhirbhai Ambani saw her. Did you know it was her father-in-law, Dhirubhai who chose her for his son, Mukesh?
During one of the Navratri festivals, when a 20-year-old Nita was performing at Birla Matoshree, Dhirubhai Ambani saw her and was impressed not only by her performance but also by her Indianness. He instantly decided to make her his daughter-in-law.
After Nita's performance next day, she got a call from Dhirubhai Ambani himself. Nita obviously thought someone was playing a prank on her and said, wrong number and disconnected the phone.
When she received the call again which said, "I'm Dhirubhai Ambani, may I talk to Nita?", a peppy, young and fiery Nita replied, "If you are Dhirubhai Ambani, then I'm also Elizabeth Taylor" and disconnected the call yet again.
Nita's father then insisted her to talk nicely to the man as he is Dhirubhai Ambani. When the call connected yet again, Nita greeted Dhirubhai, "Jai Shree Krishna" and he invited her to his office. She was completely stunned and wondered why such a big man wanted to meet her.
Nita went to Dhirubhai's office. He asked her questions like - What is she doing and what are her hobbies? After the initial talks, Dhirubhai dropped the bomb. He asked her, "Would you like to meet my son (Mukesh)?" Dhirubhai Ambani was certainly being a matchmaker between the two. No wonder, he was impressed by a young and peppy Nita who he thought would be perfect to be his son's wife.
Nita then decided to meet Mukesh for the first time at their residence. When she rang the bell, a young man dressed in white shirt opened the door. He introduced himself to Nita and that's how they met.
It was Nita and Mukesh Ambani's sixth or seventh meeting. The two were in Mukesh's fiat driving across Peddar Road in South Mumbai. Nita was still not sure about the wedding as she wanted to complete her graduation. The car stopped at the signal and this is precisely the time when Mukesh Ambani proposed Nita, "Will you marry me?"
It was 7.30pm, the traffic was at its peak, horn of the cars blew continuously and Mukesh said, "Tell me or I won't start the car!" Yes, this is precisely how Mukesh Ambani proposed Nita Ambani. With no choice left, a confused Nita actually said, "Yes I will, Yes I will." Now isn't this a peppy style to propose the girl you love?
Rest we all know is a history. Nita Amani's life is no less than a fairytale and she feels she is really blessed to have a wonderful husband like Mukesh Ambani. This is the reason why she always confessed that apart from being anything, I enjoy being Mukesh Ambani's wife.
